-
- Noooon-sense! We're looking at multitasking versus "cooperative multitasking"
- here. There is a world of difference, and that is what one notices when
- comparing the two.
-
- Paging and virtual memory are much the same thing, and using it doesn't affect
- my Amigas' multitasking. Memory protection I haven't tried [ :-) ] but Enforcer
- plus GuardianAngelRemix don't cause me much grief either. BTW the Amiga was
- never intended as a multi-user system and programming standards are quite high,
- so I doubt whether the lack of memory protection is quite as painful as you make
- it seem!
-
- Perhaps your comparison is based on university textbooks such as Tanenbaum or
- Silberschatz et al (the Dinosaur Book)? Be warned that such books aim more to
- compare interesting aspects of OS's, not to weigh their overall qualities or to
- discuss missing features.
-
- Thus they might easily skip the fact that the Mac OS doesn't multitask in the
- sense that we know it, and go on to discuss its VM system. They also tend to
- call some features "necessary" without proper justification or qualification;
- all users are assumed to have the exact same needs. And finally, their
- discussions of OSs tend to be somewhat economically biased.
